Riches from the Eagle Ford Boom - Video

You may be curious to know exactly how some folks are getting rich from the Texas oil boom, and better yet, what you can do to ride the wave. The KPRC-TV report provides a concise look at how development of the oil-rich Eagle Ford formation has brought wealth to the small South Texas town of Three Rivers. The story also provides a hint at an industry segment some locals suggest would be a money-maker.

Boom Times in Three Rivers, TX

Prior to the beginning of the boom in 2008, Three Rivers, which is about 70 miles South of  San Antonio, TX, was a sleepy little town, but that has all changed. For local residents "oil money" has changed their lives and the town in which they live. Recently, Three Rivers built an $11-million dollar junior-senior high school from tax revenues derived from oil & gas development. And some locals with mineral rights in the area have benefitted greatly from lease bonuses and "mailbox money" (i.e. royalty payments) from oil & gas production.

According to the University of Texas at San Antonio, the Eagle Ford Shale had a $61 billion economic impact across a 20-county area in 2012. That's a big chunk of change, and the money is mostly funneling into the pockets of oil & gas company executives, tertiary industry, the general workforce, mineral owners, investors and shrewd businessmen.

Getting Rich from the Eagle Ford Shale

So, the question is, what can you do to make money from the Eagle Ford boom? The best thing to do now for the majority of folks is go to work in the field, or open a business that serves the needs of the workforce. Certainly, everyone has different circumstances to consider, and not everyone has the necessary capital to open a business, but the money is there for the taking - you just have to be willing to work hard for it.

Oil patch jobs have provided individuals and families with lucrative salaries. Some rig workers can make upwards of 80k - 120k annually. Experience counts for certain positions, but entry-level opportunities can still be had as development continues to ramp up in the region. CDL Drivers are also in high demand in the Eagle Ford for hauling crude, supplies, frack water, etc. Their salaries can also top six figures.

Due to Eagle Ford development being concentrated in mainly remote areas, a growing workforce exists without access to a wide variety of amenities (i.e. washaterias, restaurants, grocery stores, etc.). Opportunities for investors to get on-board with projects in the service industry have the potential for paying off, at least up-front while there is less competition.

Plains & Enterprise Announce Eagle Ford JV Pipeline Expansion

Plains All American and Enterprise Products are planning a $120 million expansion of the Eagle Ford JV Pipeline system. The expansion will increase the pipeline's capacity to 470,000 b/d of light and medium crude grades, as well as increase storage capacity in Corpus Christi, Gardendale, and Tilden by 2.3 million barrels.

The JV pipeline system is largely in service and will be completed by September 30, 2013. The companies will add capacity by looping pipelines and adding pumping capacity. The expansion will be complete by the second quarter of 2015. The JV pipeline was initially planned with potential for 350,000 b/d of capacity.

The expansion will be completed in time to support production moving through Plains' Cactus Pipeline. The Cactus Pipeline will have the capacity to move 200,000 b/d from West Texas into the Eagle Ford region.

Double Eagle Pipeline Moving Eagle Ford Condensate to Corpus Christi

Double Eagle Pipeline, LLC, a joint venture between Kinder Morgan and Magellan Midstream, has started moving condensate to Corpus Christi.

The pipeline is part of a project that was started by Copano and Magellan, but is operated by Kinder Morgan who purchased Copano earlier in 2013.

Condensate is moving from a truck unloading facility in Three Rivers to Magellan's Corpus Christi Terminal. From the Corpus Terminal, condensate can reach local petrochemical plants, as well as water borne export options.

This leg is just a portion of what is a $150 million project that includes 140 miles of 12-inch pipelines. The system connects with other Kinder Morgan pipelines in the area as well.

The next leg of the pipeline from Gardendale (near Cotulla) to Three Rivers is expected to be online in the third quarter of 2013. Initial capacity is planned at 100,000 b/d, but the system can be expanded to handle 150,000 b/d.

The pipeline was supported by long-term commitments from Talisman and Statoil.

Live Oak Railroad Near Three Rivers Coming

The Live Oak Railroad will be breaking ground in November with plans to open in the first half of 2013. The new rail facility will include 28,000 ft of track located just south of Three Rivers. The facility has a great location almost halfway between San Antonio and Corpus Christi. If you have noticed, there has been a dramatic rise in rail traffic in South Texas related to the Eagle Ford boom.

Three other major railroad sites have grown significantly in recent times:

The Live Oak Railroad is being built by a partnership between Howard Energy Partners and local real estate developers. The primary purpose of the facility is to move liquid hydrocarbons - condensate, NGLs, and oil.

Why Move Oil by Rail?

It might surprise you that crude will move by rail. Approximately 1.8 million barrels per day of pipelines have been built or are under construction. That should be adequate capacity for quite some time, but that is only part of the story. WTI oil prices have been significantly discounted to Louisiana Light Sweet (LLS) in recent history (Read more at Eagle Ford Oil Prices Trade at a Premium to WTI).

There are several projects underway to move crude from WTI's trading point, Cushing, OK, to the Gulf Coast near Houston. Those projects will relieve congestion in Oklahoma, but will make supply more abundant in the Texas refinery complex.

All that to say, there is adequate pipeline capacity to get into the Gulf Coast Refinery Complex, BUT there is a lot of other oil on its way there too. If Eagle Ford operators can get their production across the state line into Louisiana, it might mean several more dollars per barrel. That's potentially millions of dollars of savings per day across the Eagle Ford. The Live Oak Railroad and others will be the primary trading points for oil if prices prove more lucrative in other areas of the country.
