San Antonio Business News was Led by the Eagle Ford in 2012

The Eagle Ford Shale dominated business news in South Texas during 2012. The San Antonio Express News recently ranked the play tops for 2012 in a list of business news developments in the past year.

Eagle Ford production topped the equivalent of 1 million barrels of oil per day in the third quarter. New “man camps,” RV parks and hotels to house workers continued to open. And the activity was visible in the road damage, heavy truck traffic and accidents across the region in 2012.

The play added thousands of jobs in the San Antonio area and is expected to be an economic catalyst for years to come.

Community colleges in South Texas are getting an early Christmas present. A $1.3 million grant from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board is being directed to the area in hopes that the money will help place low-income students in oilfield jobs. Some of the money will be directed toward medical occupations as well.

The Eagle Ford Job market has left South Texas with a shortage of qualified labor. Companies are in need of welders, commercial truck drivers, qualified operators, and even engineers.

The program is ear marked for as many as 1,200 students who have basic skills. Many of the grants will be used to help students who didn't complete high school or have limited English speaking ability.

Alamo College will facilitate the grant, but money will flow to community colleges in the Coastal Bend, Laredo, SW Texas, and Victoria. Many of the schools can be found on our Eagle Ford Training & Education page.

Eagle Ford Shale Stakeholders Summit - 2012

The Eagle Ford Shale Stakeholders Summit was held October 23, 2012, at Texas A&M International University in Laredo. A study released by UTSA's Tom Tunstall was the talk of the meeting. Tunstall recently published an Eagle Ford workforce analysis and the numbers are quite promising.

In the 14 counties where the play is actively producing, 38,000 Eagle Ford jobs were supported in 2011 and over 80,000 jobs will be supported by 2021. The most significant occupational impacts have been see in what Tunstall characterizes as construction and extraction, office support, transportation, support services, management, and other professional occupations.

Webb County and Karnes County led the region in Eagle Ford workforce with 6,983 and 6,092 jobs supported by the development in 2011. Those numbers are projected to grow to over 10,000 jobs in Webb and almost 15,000 jobs in Karnes by 2012. Wow.

Interestingly, over one-half of all employees hired have only required moderate to short-term on-the-job training as of 2011. Only 10% of jobs require a bachelors degree. In 2021, moderate to short-term on-the-job training will still account for almost half of the workforce and jobs requiring a bachelors degree will rise to 15% of the workforce.

Other items covered at the event included:

  • Finding workers is difficult and the industry needs everyone from drivers to engineers
  • Truck routes are being developed, but roads are taking a pounding in the mean time
  • Teachers and lower paid employees in oil communities are moving 30+ miles away and commuting because of the housing shortage
