Maverick County (1,292 sq miles) borders Mexico and lies in South Texas above a the Eagle Ford shale and the Pearsall shale.

Maverick County is part of the greater Maverick Basin where operators are targeting the Pearsall shale gas formation and the liquids-rich Eagle Ford shale oil play. As you move north in Maverick County, the Eagle Ford formation is shallower and the carbonate content of the formation increases. The changes in geology in the central and northern portion of the county produce a crude that is closer to 30 degree API where most of the Eagle Ford produces light crude (greater than 31 API) or condensate (greater than 50 API).

County services of interest to oil and gas lease owners include the Maverick County Appraisal District (tax collector) office and the Maverick County Clerk (property records) office. The county seat and only incorporated town in Maverick is the town of Eagle Pass.

Major Operators in Maverick County

Anadarko, Newfield, and Shell are the largest producing companies in the county. Anadarko and Newfield both added to their Maverick Basin assets after TXCO Resources went bankrupt in 2010.  The two companies effectively split the acreage with Newfield acquiring TXCO's central and northern Maverick County assets and Anadarko adding to its position in southern Maverick.  Shell's entire position was acquired through a single lease at Harrison Ranch.
