Austin County, TX and the Eagle Ford Shale Play
Austin County (656 sq miles) forms part of the Eagle Ford Shale play in Southeast Texas. The boom across much of South Texas has yet to incite much activity in Austin County, but the Eagle Ford formation is present within the county boundaries. The oil & gas industry currently produces from formations such as the Austin Chalk and the Wilcox.
Austin County forms part of the Eagle Ford where the thermal maturity of the formation will yield mostly natural gas production. Austin County is at a disadvantage to the core counties of the Eagle Ford in that the formation thins in this area and has a higher clay content, which can make completing wells more difficult. In a higher gas price environment, it is possible operators would test the potential of the formation here.
County services of interest to oil and gas lease owners include the Austin County Appraisal District (tax collector) and the Austin County Clerk(property records) office. The county seat is Belleville, which is approximately 55 miles west of Houston, TX. Other communities in Austin County include Brazos Country, Industry, Sealy, Wallis, and San Felipe.
