Lee County, TX and the Eagle Ford Shale Play
Lee County (634 sq miles) legacy producing area best known for the Giddings Field. Operators target the Austin Chalk at Giddings and other conventional targets produce throughout the county.
The Eagle Ford shale serves as the source rock in this area and much of the oil has been expelled into the overlying Austin Chalk. Early Eagle Ford drilling results in this area were not as positive as other areas. The county lies in the oil maturity window of the Eagle Ford, but the geology of the Eagle Ford formation in this area is not as conducive to production as it is to the southwest toward Fayette, Gonzales, and DeWitt counties. In general, the formation is thinner and has a higher clay content than the more active areas of the play.
County services of interest to oil and gas lease owners include the Lee County Appraisal District (tax collector) office and the Lee County Clerk (property records) office. Lee County is approximately 100 miles northwest of Houston, TX. The county seat is the town of Giddings. The only other incorporated town in Lee County is Lexington.
